Biomarker Intelligence & Evidence Curation

Organising evidence for cancer-specific biomarker interpretation, including strength, context, conflicting evidence and uncertainty.

A 3D model of the KRAS protein structure.

Stated area of interest Named by KPCIRC as an area of scientific interest. Not a claim of an active funded project.

Evidence about biomarkers is scattered across guidelines, regulatory decisions, trials, laboratory studies and knowledge bases, and it does not all carry the same weight. This theme focuses on curating that evidence so its strength, setting and conflicts stay visible.

Questions of interest

  • How should evidence from different sources and levels be ranked for a specific cancer and setting?
  • How should conflicting evidence be presented?
  • How quickly does curated evidence go out of date, and how should it be dated?

Approaches

  • Evidence-level tagging by source and setting
  • Use of knowledge bases such as OncoKB, CIViC, VICC, My Cancer Genome, JAX-CKB and COSMIC, depending on the case
  • Dated, traceable evidence statements

Connection to clinical services

Directly informs the SynerGX layer and the evidence resources used in POAS reports.

A laboratory scientist reviewing results on a monitor.

Limitations

  • Inclusion of a source does not imply endorsement or equal evidence strength.
  • Evidence from one tumour type may not apply to another.
